Winemaking Notes

This is the fourth vintage of this wine and the fruit source remains the same. I only work with small Coombsville farmers (1-3 acres) so I can maintain control over the farming and maintain lasting fruit sources (aka consistency).

Aged for 20 months in 20% American and 80% French oak (of which 80% is new). This blend is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. As usual with the PRIME Cabernets, I picked at moderate sugar levels despite harvesting well into October. I am drawn to the cool climate of Coombsville is this extra bit of hangtime without the grapes turning to raisins.

Steve Heimoff describes it as follows, "It's a big gulp of blackberry jam and blueberry preserves, smeared onto buttered toast, with a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar, and a few flakes of freshly-squeezed black pepper."

Winemaking Notes

I only work with small Coombsville farmers (1-3 acres) so I can maintain control over the farming and maintain lasting fruit sources (aka consistency).

Aged for 20 months in 28% American and 72% French oak (of which 80% is new). This blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot.

As usual with the PRIME Cabernets, I picked at moderate sugar levels despite harvesting well into October. The reason I am drawn to the cool climate of Coombsville is because of this extra bit of hangtime without the grapes turning to raisins.

District 4, one of California's 17 grape growing districts, is known to most as Napa Valley. Only 4% of all the grapes grown in California come from our state's famous District 4.

Winemaking Notes

This is our 3rd vintage of the Red Blend. Hot on the heals of the well received and sold out 2013 District 4 Red Blend is this years version. While I blended 4 varieltals from within Napa Valley again this year, you will find a differnence in the percentages of each. I added a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than the previous vintage and found this refined the tannins while still leaving you with a very drinkable wine today. The wine was aged in mostly French oak of which about 30% was new.

2014 PRIME Chardonnay Coombsville, Napa Valley

Tech notes:

100% Napa Valley (Coombsville)

100% Chardonnay

3.29 pH

.76 g/100ml total acidity

Alcohol 14.2%

243 cases

100% Barrel Fermented: 45% Stainless Steel, 33% once used Oak, 22% new Acacia

Fermented on the lees. Stirred weekly for 5 months. No Malolactic fermentation.

Winemaking Notes

The 2014 vintage of PRIME Chardonnay comes from the 27 year old vines of the Berry LaneVineyard in Napa's Coombsville district.

The wine was made in a fairly unusual style: 45% stainless steel, 33% Oak and 22% Acacia. The Acacia wood adds a unique floral and honey note to the wine. The three styles were blended just before bottling. To preserve the natural acidity, the wine did not go through malolactic fermentation. The result is a Chardonnay with focused minerality and an unusually crisp acid profile yet has the flavors associated with barrel fermentation.
